The 2011 Shake it Up! Winners Cash In

LAS VEGAS, MARCH 10, 2011 – Mathias Simonis, mixologist at Distil in Milwaukee, took top honors at the fifth annual Shake it Up! Competition held at the 2011 Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas this week. Presented by Nightclub & Bar and Southern Wine & Spirits, the contest is the perennial favorite among mixology competitions, with this year’s total purse of $25,000 representing an increase in the prizes awarded.

In the final round, competitors were challenged to create a cocktail on the spot with a secret ingredient: Lindemans Lambic Beer. Simonis’ Last Second Sour, involving Bernhiem Wheat Whiskey, Fee Brothers Falernum, Fee Brothers Cranberry Bitters, egg whites and a float of Lindemans Framboise Lambic, wowed the panel of judges, earning him the $15,000 First Place prize.

· 3rd Place – Tim Tsang, Dugout Bar & Grill, Staten Island, NY

· 4th Place – Darren West, JG Steakhouse @ Aria, Las Vegas

· 5th Place - Allie Persons, Heritage Hotels, Santa Fe, NM

Emcee Francesco Lafranconi, Corporate Director of Mixology & Spirits Educator, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., kept the energy going as the competition went into high gear on the Main Stage at the Nightclub & Bar Show floor before a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd of enthusiastic onlookers.

The Shake it Up! event at the Nightclub & Bar Show showcased the talents of up-and-coming mixologists who demonstrated skill, flair and creative concoctions by presenting original recipes that were judged by a panel of the nation’s leading Southern Wine & Spirits mixologists including Bridget Albert, Armando Rosario, David Nepove, Chandra Lam, Jason Girard, Alan Katz, Arturo Sighinolfi and Michael Trujillo. Contestants used products sponsored by Babco Imports, Barsol USA, Beam Global, Cabana Cachaca, Cognac Ferrand, Cooper Spirits, Diageo Spirits, Domaine Select Wine Estates, Don Q Rum, Fee Brothers, Feve rings, Palm Bay International, Patron Spirits, Pernod Ricard, Preiss Imports, Shaw Ross and Skyy Spirits. All Glassware was provided by Cardinal International, bars were supplied by Smart Products and ice provided by Ice-O-Matic.
