In a new twist on visual entertainment in clubs, Lolita’s Cantina and Tequila Bar, scheduled to open July 23, will be the first nightclub in the U.S. to feature holograms. Yes, holograms. Owned by developer Eric DeBiasi and celebrity chef Carlo Cavallo, the nightclub features a theater as the centerpiece of the club, using fire-retardant polymers and high-definition video to create the holograms. The holographic videos, from Digital Illusions and Rick Haynes, showcase anything from virtual dancing girls to magicians to entertainers; the DJ controls all the content.

After yet another deadly shooting in San Francisco, the Public Safety Committee voted to expand the San Francisco Entertainment Commission power shut down problem nightclubs on Monday. The EC, with the recommendation of Supervisor David Chiu, was granted the power to revoke the entertainment permit of any club considered a threat to public safety. Under the new guidelines, clubs would have to wait a year before reapplying for a permit.

Dire news from across the pond: According to research from Mintel, 13 percent of the United Kingdom’s nightclubs closed last year (355 of the country’s 2,722). “The increasing gap between the cost of alcohol to drink in-home and that bought in the on-trade (i.e. pubs, bars, clubs and other licensed venues) which can be as much as five or six times more expensive, has meant a general shift towards in-home drinking for the UK population over the past five years,” Mintel’s Senior Drinks Analyst Jonny Forsyth told the Morning Advertiser.

Expanding its portfolio, PURE Management Group re-launched its Pan-Asian restaurant Social House inside Crystals at CityCenter. The sushi restaurant is housed in an enclosed dining area with an open dining terrace that overlooks the first floor shopping areas of Crystals. It also houses a bar and lounge area and coffee bar. The new space balances contemporary and old world styles, including dark woods with chocolate, red and orange colors, and antique Japanese newspaper is used in the design, incorporated into the prayer wheel structure outside the space.
