Interlocks in Play

Car KeysAs the American Beverage Institute (ABI) membership convenes its annual conference in Florida this month, hot topics will include ignition-interlock legislation and the use of federal funding for in-vehicle alcohol detectors. All eyes are on the latest versions of the highway reauthorization legislation, which originally mandated ignition interlocks for all drunk-driving offenders. The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure’s recent version does not include that language, but the Washington, D.C.-based hospitality lobbying group is monitoring the bill and will oppose the inclusion of an interlock mandate. ABI also opposes the bill’s provision for $24 million in funding for development of in-vehicle alcohol detection systems, as well as the ROAD SAFE Act, which calls for $60 million in similar funding with a goal of making alcohol detection systems standard equipment in all cars.

Both elements are crucial to the future of your business. To learn more, search keyword “interlock” at nightclub.com. For more information on ABI, visit www.abionline.org.
