Early last week my husband, Jevon, and I packed our things, got the kids to school with a plan to stay with grandma, dropped off the dogs and jumped in the car, bound for the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas. It was an exciting trip: Jevon had been tracking the coming events for the show, and we couldn’t wait to meet the vendors and deliver my first educational session for the show. I had been preparing for some time to share the ins and outs of the science of design.
Monday evening began with an interview about my speaking engagement scheduled for the following day. After picking up our show passes, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the evening’s festivities. We started the night out right with the “Bar Rescue” happy hour, sponsored by BevIntel and Spike TV’s “Bar Rescue” at LAVO in The Palazzo. We had a wonderful time with Jon Taffer, president of Nightclub & Bar Media Group and “Bar Rescue” star; his wife, Nicole; Chef Brian Duffy; and many of the other men and woman who work so hard for Nightclub & Bar and “Bar Rescue.”
After some appetizers and cocktails, we were off to the Welcome Kick-Off Party at Caesars Palace. The hall was filled with vendors offering samples of their products. From beer to vodka, soda to moonshine, many exciting new products were present. We stopped to get photos with the green M&M, Cleopatra and Caesar as well as some amazing decorative trees but were escorted to the Monday Night Platinum Party at XS at Encore, sponsored by Heineken, Don Julio and Rums of Puerto Rico. Behind the bar were lovely gold-leaf reverse nude sculptures. The optical illusion was the turn of the torso as you walked by.
Tuesday morning, I reviewed my presentation before hopping in a cab to check out the grand opening of the convention. There was great energy in the Exhibition Hall as the crowd pressed in to check out all of the visiting vendors and their products. Jevon and I skimmed the floor but retreated as my session time approached. I began my session with a full room and shared my experience and thoughts regarding the science of design. It was so much fun! At the end, I was happy to take many questions and hope that my observations were encouraging and inspiring to my attendees.
Next it was back to the showroom floor to introduce myself to vendors and get to know the upcoming products and services of the industry. I was particularly impressed with various lighting displays and tap systems. At the close of the day, I put up my feet to prepare for the Top 100 Platinum Party, hosted by Ne-Yo and Malibu Red, at Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub in The Cosmopolitan. The nightclub was off the chain! Jevon and I had a blast dancing with our friends and watching an incredible light and effects display while the crowd went wild.
Wednesday started out with a keynote address titled “No Excuses: Taffer’s Simple Science of Success” by Jon Taffer, who spoke to a packed house of hundreds of eager bar and nightclub owners and operators. Then Jevon and I were off, back to the showroom floor to check out the booths we had missed the day before. We ran into some new friends and vowed to have a hearty steak dinner before the Wednesday Night Platinum Party, sponsored by MillerCoors, Wild Shot Mezcal, Street King and SX Liquors, at TAO in The Venetian with special guest Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The evening proved to top the rest with another massive crowd, great friends and colleagues and plenty of beverages.
If you haven’t yet been to the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show, make your plans for next year now. It was an amazing experience for my husband and I. We learned so much about the industry and had the time of our lives in the process!
