Next 50

The 2012 Nightclub & Bar Top 100 list isn’t even in development yet — we’ll launch the survey in October and announce the list in February 2012 — but industry pros are already asking us which venues will be on it! So, we took a look at some operations that were knocking on the door of the 2011 Top 100 list. These venues delivered solid sales in 2010, and some may be contenders for the Top 100 in 2012.

Therefore, we present to you the Next 50. We applaud their dedication and innovation. After all, it’s one thing to succeed with a major club in a major market where partiers and players abound, but it’s a whole different challenge for a smaller venue to compete against the larger ones — or stay packed and profitable in a smaller market.

The Top 100 and now our Next 50 are the industry’s only revenue-based rosters of top-performing nightclubs and bars. The lists are developed by Nightclub & Bar and Chicago-based hospitality market-research firm Technomic Inc. via an online survey and secondary research. The Next 50 is drawn from our 2011 Top 100 survey conducted in fall 2010; inclusion in the Next 50 is based on 2010 revenues.

Raise a glass to these venues and the teams that manage them. They’re generating excitement and sales in a tough environment; some even reported double-digit growth for 2010 and ongoing increases this year.

Notable Newcomers

Some impressive venues opened in 2010, and while they’re racking up stellar sales, they were unable to qualify for either the 2011 Top 100 or Next 50 rosters (clubs and bars must be operating consistently throughout the 12 months of the prior year). These venues are among those vying for a spot on the 2012 Top 100 list, so stay tuned.

Leading the pack are two new ventures from Strategic Group: Marquee Las Vegas (opened Dec. 31, 2010) at The Cosmopolitan and Lavo New York (April 2010). Light Group’s Gold Lounge at the Aria Resort (October 2010) is turning heads in Las Vegas. Our 2011 Nightclub & Bar Award Las Vegas New Club of the Year finalist, Surrender Nightclub at Encore in the Wynn Las Vegas, famous for its DJs, go-go dancers and remarkable outdoor oasis, opened Memorial Day 2010.

In San Diego, FLUXX (March 2010) is making waves, while Drai’s Hollywood (March 2010) made a splash with a rooftop pool. Brent Bolthouse opened Los Angeles lounge Trousdale (March 2010), and in Northern California, Pura Club (June 2010) is taking San Francisco by storm, packing in more than 1,000 guests almost every Saturday night.

New York always has an electric club scene, and Studio XXI (December 2010), a boutique club with an intimate setting, is proof of that. If you’re in South Beach, Wall (October 2010) in Miami is a weekend hot spot for locals, celebrities and tourists. And the Midwest can dance all night at The Vibe Chicago (May 2010), a Nightclub & Bar New Club of the Year finalist.
