Openings: New on the Scene: Aug. 18, 2010

Barney’s Beanery opened its fifth Beanery in southern California’s Westwood Village. The Beanery offers 200 imported and domestic beers with 40 on tap. The décor mimics the original West Hollywood Beanery and is adorned with road signs, candy-colored booths and battered license plates on the ceiling. The addition of second floor stadium seating allows for better viewing of the theater-size plasma screen TV. Bucket seats from classic cars surround the bar, and high-definition screens are used for Xbox, Wii and karaoke.

Covet Restaurant & Lounge, located in Midtown Manhattan, is a bi-level venue that is part restaurant, part nightclub. The cocktail menu, created by mixologist Orson Salicetti, includes the Shaman (Hungarian paprika, pineapple Mezcal, Himalayan salt rim with spices), Her Martini (premium vodka, extract ginger, aphrodisiac tea, covet sour and hibiscus bitters) and The Icarus, a $160 drink made with Louis XIII Cognac, which is priced at $1,600 a bottle. The downstairs nightclub has the feel of an Alpine ski lounge and holds 300. Covet also has an intimate cocktail lounge hidden below the main floor featuring music by resident DJ Evalicious.

Open Door Gastropub recently opened in New York’s Financial District. Its beer list features more than 40 bottled beers including local, handcrafted and imported Belgian and European beers. Beers are paired with menu items emphasizing the food and gastropub theme, including truffle macaroni and cheese, duck sliders and Guinness cake with a shot of whiskey. The pub features mini-chandeliers hanging over the long curving bar, with Georgian doors from Ireland welcoming guests. The upscale pub has a large back room, with its own private entrance that is available for parties of 100 people.

Open Door Gastropub

Potential Entertainment opened The Atlantic Bar & Grill, the ocean liner-inspired restaurant, in Hollywood. The cocktail menu includes the Daisy de Santiago, made with Havana Club Rum; the Rattlesnake, made with Sazerac Rye and an absinthe rinse; the Georgia Mint Julep, made with fresh mint leaves, sugar, Cognac and peach brandy; and more. The menu, created by Chef Gary Robbins from the Russian Tea Room, ranges from a raw bar selection, fish of the day option and steak frites.

The Neighborhood Sports Bar and Grill is celebrating its grand opening in Boca Raton, Fla. The sports bar features the largest projection screen TV in South Florida and a flat-screen TV is at every table. Live music is featured every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, and Thursday nights are Ladies’ Night, where women eat free from 6-9 p.m. and drink free until 10 p.m. The menu at Neighborhood Sports Bar includes hamburgers, Nathan’s hot dogs and Almond Crusted Dolphin with dark butter. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Cuba Libra Restaurant & Rum Bar will preview its new Washington, D.C., location on Sept. 17. The restaurant, located in the Penn Quarter neighborhood, is modeled after pre-Castro Old Havana and seats 200. During the preview period, guests will receive 50 percent off their meal until September 23 and from September 25 through September 30 guests will receive a 25 percent discount off full price menu items. The menu, developed by Guillermo Pernot and executive chef Jason Kaufman, features a “Nuevo Cubano” menu.
