On Oct. 7, 2011, the W Scottsdale celebrated its anniversary by transforming into “W of Oz”, a modern version of the classic film and novel "Wizard of Oz," complete with a yellow brick road leading from the entrance to Emerald City that was arranged in the center of the WET pool. Giant iconic ruby red slippers served as a focal piece in which guests were able to receive complimentary photos as mementos for the evening.

As guests entered the W Scottsdale hotel and proceeded to the stairs that lead to its hip outdoor lounge, Shade, they were greeted by munchkins who welcomed them with a performance to the wonderful land of ‘Oz’. Guests then walked up the stairs and under a rainbow into the outdoor bar area and onto the yellow brick road. The W staff all dressed to go along with the theme, from the ‘flying monkey’ bar-backs and the ‘Dorothy’ VIP hosts, to the lion, tin-man and scarecrow bartenders.

Shade LoungA beautiful contortionist emulated the Good Witch of the North, who waved at the crowd and performed back-bending feats in a giant ‘snow globe’. Stilt-walkers playing the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man were also seen throughout the party, finding time to pose for photos in between exploring Oz and hiding from flying monkeys which hung above the VIP cabanas.

One of the most enticing rooms of the night was the birthday cake room. A giant specially made six-layer cake was the centerpiece in the forest of glittering trees and hanging apples. Over a hundred delicious treats in the form of caramel covered apples rolled in sweets such as M&M’s, Oreos and candy canes covered the tables, keeping every guest’s sweet tooth satisfied.

Throughout the night munchkins sang and danced on a stage that appeared to be floating inside the W’s WET pool, aligned with giant green crystals and back dropped by projections of the evil Wizard of Oz.

This is the third year Steve LeVine Entertainment & Public Relations has coordinated this event for the W Scottsdale. Previous years events included Alice in Wonderland inspired “W Scottsdale Alice In Wonderlust” and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory inspired “W Scottsdale Wonka”.
