Wirtz Beverage Nevada Hosts Bacardi 150th Anniversary MGM Resorts International Cocktail Competition

In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Bacardi, Wirtz Beverage Nevada recently teamed up with MGM Resorts International to host the Bacardi 150th Anniversary MGM Resorts Cocktail Competition. Bartenders from seven MGM Resorts hotels converged inside Wirtz Beverage Nevada’s cutting-edge beverage development and training lab, The Alchemy Room, in a contest to create an original Bacardi Superior cocktail.

“Bacardi is an iconic brand, known for bringing some of the best products to market,” says Drew Levinson, director of beverage development for Wirtz Beverage Nevada, who also served as one of three event judges. “It’s only fitting to celebrate 150 great years with some of Las Vegas’ top talent in a first-class facility like The Alchemy Room. It was an outstanding event accompanied by equally outstanding libations. ”

The competition was exclusive to bartenders from MGM Resorts’ Las Vegas properties. Participating properties included ARIA, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Luxor and New York-New York. Stanley Schaffe from MGM Grand’s Zuri took home top honors in the Luxury category while Mike Musinski from Luxor’s TENDER Steak & Seafood placed first in the Core category.

The winning Bacardi cocktails, which will be available soon at each contender’s property until February 2013, were the Cherry Drop featuring Bacardi Superior, Bacardi Torched Cherry, rock candy syrup, lime and cherry brandy syrup and the Basil Mojito featuring Bacardi Superior, basil, rock candy syrup, club soda and fresh lime, created by Schaffe and Musinski, respectively.

Set against a backdrop of hundreds of Bacardi Superior bottles, the event welcomed nearly 100 guests who enjoyed live music and additional Bacardi cocktails compliments of Master Mixologist Andrew Pollard of Wirtz Beverage Nevada and Hall of Fame Bartender Ray Srp. In addition to Drew Levinson, the event welcomed other industry experts to its judging panel including Xania Woodman, Vegas Seven and David Cid, Brand Master, Bacardi.
