It's a Plaid, Plaid, Plaid, Plaid World! Happy National Tartan Day!

A vintage postcard featuring Scottish Clan tartans.

Break out the bagpipes and kilts because it’s National Tartan Day! If you’re of Scottish heritage or just appreciate the culture, make sure to commemorate the Scottish Declaration of Independence today. Rock your tartan – the pattern of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands of multiple colors that identifies your clan – if you know it. Don’t let the buzzkillers out there give you any guff about clan tartans being an invented tradition. Even if they are, tartans are cool and kilts are even cooler. The two most popular tartans are those of the Black Watch and Royal Stewart. The Black Watch, whose motto is Nemo Me Impune Lacessit (“No One Provokes Me with Impunity”), is known for their classic green, blue and black tartan, while the Royal Stewart’s tartan is that famous pattern of black, blue, white and yellow over red. Cue “The More You Know” music.

Today (the rest of the week, really) is a fantastic time to put your Scotch front and center. Consider highlighting your high-dollar, rare or otherwise special Scotch whiskies. You can also create tasting flights. Of course, you should also celebrate Drambuie’s sudden resurgence. For those who have forgotten or never knew, Drambuie is a blend of Scotch, honey, herbs and spices. The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic an dram buidheach, which translates to “the drink that satisfies.” And before you scoff at this iconic liqueur, Wine Enthusiast gave Drambuie a rating of 96-100 at their 2008 spirits competition.
